When you’re at a party or with new people and making small talk, the subject of music almost always comes up. And my response is pretty much always the same. I say that I’m not really particular about my music and that I listen to lots of different types of music. The only types that I don’t like are Country and Death Metal.
But really that is a bold faced lie.
And while I do have lots of different music that I listen to there are loads of music that I think are God-awful. Sure it’s cool if you listen to it but there is no way in Hell that I will ever have certain music played in my home.
I do still hate country music, but its new country specifically that I don’t like. I actually can’t name more than 3 country music groups so I’ll just leave it at that. And to clarify I do like old country; give me some Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, The Oakridge Boys or Kenney Rogers any day over the crap that’s played on the radio.
I also don't like any easy listening music. I'm not fond of any religious music unless it's Gregorian Chants. I don't like most Rap, again unless it's old school.
But for music that I do like, I have three True Loves.
First and always is Classic Rock. I can’t even describe just what it is about this genre that makes me so giddy. It doesn’t matter what mood I am in, if you throw on some Classic Rock everything just melts away. And while I do have over 800 Classic Rock songs on my iTunes most of them are not what you would assume. Sure I have Led Zeppelin, The Stone, The Who and The Doors; it’s the more unique bands/songs that hold a place close to my heart.
To listen to and see some of what I'm talking about check these out:
Don’t Fear the Reaper ~ Blue Oyster Cult
Ah Leah! ~ Donnie Iris
Werewolves of London ~ Warren Zevon
This Flight Tonight ~ Nazareth
The next True Love I have is 80’s music. It’s what I grew up with as a kid as I started elementary school in 1980. The music then was so happy, so simple and gets so stuck in your head. I’m sure I don’t have to make a list of these songs as unless you grew up on Mars you know exactly what I’m talking about.
My third, and really it’s a close tie with Classic Rock, would be 80’s Hair Bands. I still rock out to Motley Crue, Poison, Whitesnake, and KISS and of course Ozzy. I get the most quizzical stares from this one as I have been told that I don’t look the type to be a Head Banger. But again I grew up in the early 80’s in the Westend. And what does that mean? Well it means that my brother had an Anthrax poster on his bedroom door, and I was completely and totally in love with Tommy Lee. What can I say; I had a thing for drummers. My ultimate favourite song of all time would be Paranoid by Black Sabbath and I have a total “thing” for Ozzy Osbourne. And I don’t mean I want to marry him and make-out with him all day (cause ewwww!!!) but I just love his music! Really I do.
So there. I’m sure that’s something you didn’t know about me. I wear pearl earrings, I have a thing against swearing in public or talking about sex in public but I love Rock&Roll music. Or as KISS would say I Love It Loud.
